FSU 28 BC 17 - Final

1st Quarter
14:53 - First play from scrimmage, and Boston College throws an interception: A.J. Nicholson (LB) returns it for a touchdown. FSU 7 BC 0
10:01 - A.J. Nicholson just made his second Interception of the night, and made a 30 yard return. He’s also made 3 solo tackles, and is looking to have a monster night.
9:16 - Drew Weatherford hits Greg Carr in the end zone for a 20 yard touchdown strike. Cismesia adds the extra point. FSU 14 BC 0
4:42 - Matthew Ryan of BC kicks a 30 yard field goal. FSU 14 BC 3
Commentary: FSU has only run 5 offensive plays, and the defense has been out on the field for the whole first quarter. The defense is tired, understandably, and needs a stop. When the offense takes the field again, they need to put together a long, sustained drive to give the defense a breather.
0:45 - BC gets a rushing touchdown, and Ryan adds the extra point. FSU 14 BC 10
2nd Quarter
10:36 - L.V. Whitworth of BC rushes for another touchdown while my wife has me doing some chores. No idea what happened. Extra point is also apparently good. FSU 14 BC 17
Halftime Commentary:
BC’s Offensive size is wearing down on FSU’s faster defense. The BC O-line is doing a good job against FSU’s defensive linemen. They’re using their strength to contain the speed, and the FSU guys are having to fight uphill to get to the QB, and so far, they haven’t been very successful.
On the other hand, FSU’s defense seems to have stabilized. They held BC scoreless since the 10:36 mark, even though the FSU offense wasn’t doing them any favors. If the defense can continue to at least hold, it’ll only take a single score from the offense to take back the lead.
BC’s defense hasn’t had to do anything special. Drew Weatherford is just a freshman, and other than that opening TD pass, he hasn’t looked sharp. I expect that he’ll get the first couple of series to start the second half, but if he doesn’t produce, look for Mr. Lee to show up to try to get something going…
3rd Quarter
No scores…
Commentary: FSU’s offense is starting to heat up, and had it not been for a goal-line fumble (questionable, at best), they’d have retaken the lead.
Weatherford is playing out of the old “Fast Break” offense, which is what Charlie Ward used to run, wih 4-wides… He looks much better, and the receviers are catching his throws. The running backs are also finding some room to work.
Short passes to the backs in the flat… 7 and 8 yard out routes. This is the way Charlie used to run it, and nobody could stop it. Loving it…
4th Quarter
10:13 - Weatherford ends the drought, hitting Carr in the back of the endzone from the 6 yard line. Cismesia extra point good. Drive Info: 10 Plays, 63 Yards, 3:50 - FSU 21 BC 17
3:53 - Lorenzo Booker takes it in on the ground from the 3, and Cismesia’s kick is good. FSU 28 BC 17
Commentary: The Defense finishes the game with an 8-play goal-line stand, denying BC another score.
I sure hope that the Bowdens, both father and son, were paying attention to the way Weatherford playing when he was allowed to operate out of the spread offense. He was quick… He was confident… He was accurate… And BC couldn’t stop it.
FSU should be utilizing the Fast-Break all the time… It gives the QB a better look at the field, and gives him a little more breathing room. Our “running game” used to come from backs receiving screen passes and quick outs to the flat, and nobody could contain it. It’s time that the spread offense once again became a permanent fixture for the Garnet and Gold.
